One issue between Windows and Macintosh computers is the inability of the Mac to read and write Windows NTFS formatted hard disks. Recently Paragon software released its new revision of NTFS for Mac OS X 7.0, a driver that allows for read/write access to Microsoft Windows NTFS partitions. What NTFS for Mac OS X 7.0 does is give Mac users with Boot camp partitions ( formatted using the Windows NTFS file system) read and write access while in the Mac OS.
Without this driver, Mac OS can see the NTFS partition and all the files but not change them. This version of NTFS for Mac also includes Paragonā??s MacBrowser software that allows for access to Mac partitions from the Windows side. So now this revision of the software is comprehensive in its access capabilities in both operating systems.
Accessing Windows partitions in the Mac OS can be a pain, but the same applies for accessing Mac OS formatted drives in Windows. Most times this task isnā??t even possible. The Mac OS uses a different file system format than the Windows OS and unlike FAT or FAT32 each file system cannot be read by the other operating system. This inability to read and write across the formats can be a bit troublesome when trying to use files or folders in both operating systems, especially with many software developers now supporting both operating systems. The ability to transfer files between the two formats eliminates the need for another hard drive or partition, external drive, or other type of storage in a format that can be used by both operating systems. With NTFS for Mac OS X, access across the formats is possible. Many people will be happy about this ability, especially those who use programs that are available in both platforms.
NTFS for Mac OS X comes with a new system preferences pane that enables access to settings for the NTFS partitions available to your computer. You can set access permissions, file compression for files and folders, and the ability to disable the last access time. All of these settings can also be set as the start up defaults with a click of a button. This preferences pane also includes a list of the available NTFS partitions that can be accessed. There is also the check box that allows you to turn off the driver altogether.
For bridging the gap in the different file system formats, Paragonā??s NTFS for Mac OS X 7.0 does the job. Now with the driver working in both directions this driver is a great complement to those users who work in both operating systems and with the same files and folders.
NTFS for Mac OS X 7.0 supports all versions of NTFS file systems from Windows NT 3.1 all the way to Windows Vista (NTFS version s 1.2, 3.0, and 3.1). it is priced at $39. A trial version can be downloaded at http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
